Opening an account in Malta as a foreign national

To make opening a Malta account as easy as possible, we can help you before you arrive.

Accounts may be opened in euro, pound sterling, United States dollars and all other major currencies.

How do you apply?

It only takes a few minutes to complete our online form.

You’ll also have the chance to apply for an HSBC Advance or HSBC Premier account if you’re eligible.

After submitting your application, you will be contacted by one of our representatives who will guide you as to what is required next to finalise your application.

What do I need for the application?

Before you start, it’s best to have the following to hand:

Any 2 of the following:

passport
national ID (front and back images where applicable)
driving licence (front and back images where applicable)

Notes:

for a Basic Bank Account, only one of these documents is required. If the above documents are not held, an official document containing photographic evidence of identity which is recognised as a legal means of identification by the national law or EU.
a Maltese Residence Permit is required for non-EU citizens (front and back images)
documents should not be expired.

Basic Bank Account:

One of the following documents is required.

a government-issued document containing details of the permanent residential address
correspondence from a central or local government authority, department or agency within the last 4 months
a utility bill in relation to services linked to the permanent residential address issued within the last 4 months. In cases of no fixed address other documents are to be requested as required.

Current or Savings account:

A second verification document, in these cases, is only required if you may not provide one of the above-mentioned documents or if the residential address on the above-mentioned documents is missing or incorrect.

police conduct issued within the last 4 months
bank statement issued within the last 4 months
utility bill in relation to services linked to the permanent residential address issued within the last 4 months

A photo showing your face next to the identification document. Please ensure that the picture is clear and that all details on the identification document are visible.

utility bill from a telephone service provider. If the utility bill is in your landlord’s name we would need a copy of your rental agreement, or
letter from the employer confirming your details and contact number on a company letterhead.

working in Malta - valid Work Contract – with a minimum validity period of 6 months
self employed in Malta - VAT certificate, trading license and confirmation of self - employment from Jobsplus
own / purchasing property in Malta - property ownership contract or a valid preliminary agreement showing your intention to purchase property within the next 6 months
studying in Malta - Acceptance letter from school, institution or university
renting property in Malta - rental agreement with a minimum validity period of 6 months. This document is to be provided if none of the above applies

Kindly provide us with all the requested documents. If all documents are not attached to the application form, we may NOT be in a position to process the application.

These are generally all the documents we require for the opening of personal accounts, however there may be instances where we may be required to obtain further supporting documentation. If this is the case, we will inform you about this during or after our meeting.
